The film was directed by John Hillcoat, director of The Proposition, and the screenplay was written by Joe Penhall.
Viggo Mortensen, (Lord of the Rings) gave what many critics called a powerful performance as "the Man", the unnamed father travelling with his son, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee. Together these two form the heart of the movie, with flashbacks of the anguished wife and mother played by Charlize Theron (The Devil's Advocate, Monster).
The movie made a good impression at the awards. Viggo Mortensen won Best Actor at the 2009 Utah Film Critics Association awards and received 5 other Best Actor nominations across between 2009-2010. Javier Aguirresarobe won Best Cinematography at the San Diego Film Critics Society Awards in 2009 and the 2010 Vits Awards, as well as a nomination for Best Cinematography at the 2010 BAFTA awards.
