Kirsten Reed was born in 1973 in Seattle. She grew up in New Zealand, Germany and various parts of the US before moving to Australia as an adult. The Ice Age is her first novel.

The first few pages of this book had me hooked and I read it in two sittings: I'm not sure that I can give a better recommendation than that! Something about the voice and the portrayal of naive youth reminded me of The Bell Jar, or Girl, Interrupted, although the story itself is nothing like either. It also occasionally reminded me of my own teenage years. A really good read and I would recommend it.

The original was one of my favourite book covers from 2010. What I find particularly interesting is that the old and new covers are so different, yet both appropriate for the book in their own way. Here's hoping this new cover helps The Ice Age gain the audience it deserves!
