‘For some years I knew an elderly lady from Brighton who would regale me with snippets from her life when I went to see her. On each visit, both she and the West Pier became weaker until eventually they both crumbled. After she died I was struck by how bound up her life had been with the life of that structure, so I stepped into her shoes and wrote about one of her “pier memories”.’
