Over at the Penguin blog, Juliet Annan is talking about unsympathetic fictional characters. She's discussing Zoë Heller's new novel The Believers, and quotes Zoë in a recent interview saying 'It's not the job of fiction to present people with whom one might like to be friends'.

I’d be interested to know what readers thought of Rose Tremain’s The Road Home, which of course won the Orange Prize this year. Her portrayal of the experiences of an Eastern European immigrant in London has generated heated debate between myself and fellow reviewers, including members of my monthly book club.
